Clear Aligners from a General Dentist
Clear aligners are becoming more and more popular as they offer advantages that traditional braces do not. Unlike braces, clear aligners are removable and cause less discomfort. However, they are a relatively new option, which means some people may still have some unfamiliarity with how things work. For example, clear aligners can be administered by a general dentist. Many people are surprised to learn this, however, they actually make for great resources as it relates to clear aligners.
Understanding clear aligners
Below is an overview of clear aligners, including what they are and how they work. Additionally, this article highlights the role a general dentist plays in clear aligners treatment. When considering teeth straightening treatment, it can be helpful to review the following information.
What are clear aligners and how do they work?
Clear aligners are removable, transparent trays that are fitted for the top or bottom arch of teeth or both. Over the course of treatment, the aligners are switched out every six to eight weeks with new ones. At the beginning of treatment, the dentist provides the patient with an entire series of clear aligners that are custom-created for that patient. Patients will visit the general dentist every few weeks to have a check-up. During the check-up, the teeth will be carefully examined to determine how much progress has been made.
Because clear aligners are removable, they do make treatment much easier, however, this is not to say that discipline is not required. Clear aligners have to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day to ensure maximum results. Any less than this can result in longer treatment times and delayed progress.
Generally speaking, clear aligners work well for addressing crookedness, crowding, or protrusion. They are recommended for mild to moderate cases, with severe ones being better addressed with braces. Treatment times vary per patient, however, it typically does not extend past a year and a half.
The role of a general dentist in clear aligners treatment
General dentists offer clear aligners as a teeth-straightening option. They are skilled and trained to administer this treatment safely and efficiently. Additionally, it can be quite advantageous to undergo treatment in this setting as routine oral health care can be provided at the same time.
Other things to note
Clear aligners offer an array of benefits that traditional braces do not. Outlined below are a few of these benefits.
- Flexible treatment process
- Less discomfort than braces
- Quicker results as the teeth shift altogether instead of individually
- Fewer dental appointments are required as there are no physical adjustments to be made
- Less noticeable than braces
There may be other patient-specific benefits to clear aligners. Undergoing a consultation with a general dentist can help identify these.
